Why AC-DC Selection Deserves Care
An AC-DC module converts the mains into one or more isolated regulated DC rails, so it sits at the front of the system and its input range, isolation and protection set the safety and reliability of the whole design. Choosing the wrong module costs compliance and reliability. This guide walks through a repeatable method for selecting a Mornsun AC-DC power module.
Step 1: Fix the Input Range
Start with the mains. A universal 85-305 VAC input covers most world voltages with margin and accepts DC input on the same terminal, which simplifies sourcing. Confirm the range against your mains voltage and the transient requirement, and remember that a wide input range and a high surge rating make the design robust across markets. Add a suitable fuse and a metal-oxide varistor at the input for protection.
Isolation
The isolation rating separates the primary and secondary for safety. A reinforced isolation, such as 3000 VAC or 3600 VAC, suits industrial and household equipment, so confirm the rating against your system requirement and the relevant standard.
Step 2: Choose the Output and Mounting
Match the output voltage and the number of outputs to the load, and size the power with margin above the worst case. Then choose the mounting: an on-board SIP module mounts on the PCB for a compact design, an enclosed supply is a standalone chassis unit for benchtop or panel use, and a DIN-rail supply mounts in a control cabinet and often adds active power-factor correction, status LEDs and protection. The power range spans a few watts to several kilowatts, so there is a module for every scale.
Adjustable Output
Many enclosed and DIN-rail supplies have an adjustable output, which lets you compensate for distribution drop or match a specific load. Keep the total power within the rating at the adjusted voltage.
Step 3: Plan the Front End and Thermal Design
The front end protects the module and meets EMC: add the fuse, the varistor and the recommended input filter, and keep the mains wiring separated from the output. For thermal design, allow clearance for airflow and use a good thermal path, and confirm the derating at the highest ambient. In a sealed cabinet, consider a thermal path to the chassis and an enclosure with adequate rating.
EMC Compliance
Choose a module that meets the standards for your market and follow the recommended input filter for conducted emissions. The EMC result depends as much on the layout and the filter as on the module, so plan both together.
