Overview
Solar inverters and battery energy-storage converters run continuously and often outdoors, so their internal power supplies must be reliable, isolated and tolerant of a varying source. The control electronics, the gate drivers and the communication interfaces all need regulated rails, and those rails must be generated from a bus that moves with the source and the state of charge. Wide Input for a Varying Bus
A solar inverter's internal bus varies with the panel output and the operating point, and a storage converter's bus moves with the state of charge. A wide-input DC-DC module such as the Mornsun URB series, with its 4:1 input range, holds a regulated output across that variation, so the control electronics see a steady rail and the design needs no pre-regulator stage. The isolated output protects the control side from the high-voltage bus, which improves safety and reduces noise coupling.
Control and Gate-Drive Rails
The control loop and the gate-drive circuits need clean, isolated rails, and the communication interface needs its own isolated rail to keep the bus noise out. A compact isolated module generates each rail from the internal bus, and its protection keeps the rail safe during a fault. The small packages fit the dense converter board.
Auxiliary Mains Rails
Where a mains auxiliary rail is needed, a compact AC-DC module such as the Mornsun LS series converts the mains into an isolated low-voltage rail directly on the board, and its universal input and reinforced isolation suit the application. This removes the need for a separate auxiliary supply and simplifies the design.
Thermal and Environmental Design
Outdoor equipment sees wide temperature swings, so choose modules with a wide operating temperature range and confirm the derating at the highest ambient. Keep the modules cool with a good thermal path and airflow, and protect the inputs for the transient environment of a solar or storage system. A cooler module also lives longer, which matters for equipment that runs for years.
